Domain names
If you are looking to get yourself or your business a web presence,
then the first thing you are going to need is a domain name
under which to publish you website. The domain name can be anything
that you choose, from your company name to a descriptive title
related to the content of the site – there are some limitations
however.
The domain name must be alphanumeric, and cannot contain
any special characters other than underscores or hyphens,
and these cannot be used at the beginning or end of the name.
Depending on the top-level domain under which your name is
registered (e.g. .com, .co.uk) the allowable length may vary,
but typically the maximum is 63 characters, which should be
plenty for any domain name.
Your choice of domain name can be very important to the success
of your website, having a clear and easy to remember name
will help to ensure that visitors will remember it and help
with repeat visits. Although literally billions of domain
names have already been registered, you should still be able
to find a domain name suitable for your use, even if you have
to opt for a different extension such as .net instead of .com
for example.
Before you can register any domain names, you will need to
check to see if the domain name is available, you can use
the search feature at the head of this page to check if your
name is free and proceed to register it if you wish.
