Domain hosting

Once you have a domain name registered and are ready to put your website live, you will require somewhere to host it, a physical server which stores and serves the files that comprise your website, there are many different types of domain hosting to choose from which can make finding the hosting that is right for you difficult, read on for some useful information that will aid you in these decisions.

The physical machines that your site is hosted on will not have any real influence on your site in terms of the technology you can use, it is the server software that will dictate what you can use on your domain hosting. If you are planning on only using html for the delivery of your pages and are not intending to utilise dynamic pages then any domain hosting will fit the bill as they can all handle this type of use.

The domain hosting choice will generally boil down to two options: Windows hosting or UNIX (Linux) hosting. Which you choose will determine what server technologies you can use in your pages, if you are looking to use php and mySQL then the UNIX hosting would be a better option as it fully supports these (these can be used under Windows hosting, but there are few hosting companies who have this set up because of the complexity). If you want to use ASP and Access database then the Windows hosting would be the way to go as it has native support for these.

The amount of space and monthly bandwidth allocation that you get from your domain hosting are factors that need to be taken into consideration, if you are expecting a high volume of traffic and/or are serving large pages then you will need a high bandwidth allowance. The disk space you are allocated on the domain hosting server will need to be sufficient to store your entire website, and allow space for future additions.
